Description

Well, this apparently spawned after I was suddenly hit by a strong inspiration. :XD: It's a race idea of mine for the space RPG that was developing.

No new techs used ^^; mostly using this as practice for doing art for that comic of mine that I was planning.

Inspiration for the BG of the race came partly from the Draconians race that I was working on..... and partly from all over the place.

Ignore the rest if you're not interested in the Background of this race.

"We were the Forgotten ones"

Solaris Coalition
AkA: Dragonkin-Silverwing Coalition
Base planet: <None, Fleet-based>

Planet of origin:
Dragonkin: <Destroyed>
Silverwing: <Destroyed>

Faction symbol
A yellow star on a red sphere.
Origin is due probably due to the bright star in the middle of the Solaris system and the red ion nebula background of the Solaris system

Racial Description:

Dragonkin appear to be tall lizardlike anthros with a feather-like frills on their head in place of ears. They have varied scale colours. They have a strong sense of pride for being decended from dragons.
"We are the decendents of the dragons, together we will fly free" --> (Common Dragonkin saying)

Silverwings appear to be winged light-coloured fox anthros with 2 to 100 tails. There are occasional silverwings with darker fur colouration.
"We fly free with the dragons, for we are one, cast together through the same flames of war" --> (Common Silverwing Saying)

History:

Much of the knowledge regarding the Solaris Coalition is unknown, as much has been lost to time or kept in their secret files. The most well known fact of the Coalition is that it is made of two closely-knit ancient races: The Dragonkin and the Silverwings.

However it does appear that both races did originate from different planets and had two different empires that spanned vast areas of currently known and unknown space, with the Dragonkin empire being much larger. Artifacts from both empires are occasionally discovered in various planets around the universe (and are often referred to as "Lost tech" items).

The Dragonkin were originally a very tolerant, peace loving race that engaged in trading with the other fledgling races that were advanced enough to have space travel. However, they always maintained a neutral stance with regards to the various bickering between the fledgling empires.

According to history from the Coalition's archives, an unknown and horrible hostile race emerged from subspace long before even any of the currently known kingdoms took shape. From their descriptions, that race burned and scoured any advanced city that their fleet encountered. The exact reasons what that race was or what were their motives were never disclosed. The first empire to face the assault was the Dragonkins

The Dragonkin empire issued a call to arms to all the races in reach, however, the other races were unwilling to send forces to fight in distant reaches of another nation's empire. They reasoned that the much more advanced technology of the Dragonkin was sufficient to stop the new threat. Only the Silverwing empire realised the threat and stepped forth and this was the beginning of the Solaris Coalition.

In the Next decades of fighting, the Dragonkin-Silverwing force fought in bloody battles against the invading force, from fleet battles down to fighting in their own cities. Though advanced, they slowly lost ground to the vast numbers of invaders. Eventually loosing both their home worlds to planet-destroying weapons. In the end, with only a fraction of their empire left and with more than 80% of their races wiped out, critical advances in their weaponry finally turned the tide.

The remainder of their race went in pursuit of their retreating enemy to ensure that it would never threaten known space for the next millenia. Evacuating their cities to massive motherships to join the pursuit. They raised their own cities afterwards so that "none should benefit from what they didn't fight to deserve."

When they returned, they discovered that their former empire was populated by new races and empires. However, rather than making themselves known they simply watched and avoided any contact with the upstarts, retreating further through their former empire and settling in the Vast and inhospitable Solaris system (hence it's current name). They kept their bitterness to the other races of the universe for failing to help in the great war, even though most of those former races had long disappeared.

It was only a matter of time before the Solaris system was discovered by the new races (Due to recent advances in Hull technology to protect against the frequent ion fluxes) and the decision was finally made by the new ruling council to make contact with the new races. Though most still remember the bitter past, the new council decided that it would be in their Coalition's best interests to try to put aside the past for the future. Welcoming adventurous traders and others willing to join their cause. Exploratory ships were also dispatched to nearby friendly empires in the first time in centuries, however, due to their beliefs, they are secretive about their own technology and refuse to trade in it.

Unfortunately the Rastelian empire soon stumbled into the Solaris system. The Coalition found it ridiculous to submit to any other empire, especially not to these upstarts that never faced true horror before.

"We were the only ones who stood firm, against a horror you cannot imagine, so that we could fly free. We will fight for what we are and our place in this universe. To stand on our own, not under anyone's boot. We will fight to eternity's end, until we win, or we die.... And we are not dead yet." --> (Response to any ultimatum to join the empire)

Society notes:

The Solaris Coalition still firmly believes in the preparation for the return of that ancient horror and much of their resources is spent on maintaining a sizable fleet as well as research into improving their already highly advanced weapon systems. Their society also embraces the fact that every member must be able to answer the call to arms, hence combat training is a requirement for every member of the coalition.

Although they have colonized planets, the majority of their race lives in space in massive motherships that are each equivalent to a major city.

It is also notable that A Dragonkin often pairs up with a Silverwing in some stage of their life and they become what is loosely translated to as "Companions" and appear to become inseparable friends for the rest of their lives. This is very noticeable during combat (e.g. Two-seater starfighters are extremely common). However, it is also notable that both the Dragonkin and the Silverwing will each find their own mates (as the two races are incompatible) but still remain as companions for the rest of their lives.

As to how this came about is unknown. But it is a strong testament to the closeness of those two races. Dragonkin or Silverwings that are not attached in such a way are referred to as "Unbound". Oddly enough, no stigma is placed on such a term, as it is simply a neutral descriptive term for them. If either member of that bond dies, the remaining Dragonkin/Silverwing will rarely pair up with another again and they are often given the title of "Solo".

Dragonkin in this relationship tend to become rather protective of their Silverwing companion.

More recently teams of Dragonkin and Silverwings have been seen over the empires as freelance Mercenaries and are highly sought after. This was actually approved by the coalition council due to undisclosed reasons. It is also notable that teams of Solaris mercenaries will NEVER engage each other, even if they are on different sides of the battle (due to the "Solaris Vow" that all take). It also appears that the weapons the mercenaries carry are considered low tech by the Coalition.... but still appear high-tech as compared to the other races.

"Stand vigil my brothers and sisters, for the day the horrors return from the darkness, is the day we will rise again to cast them back to where they came from." --> (Common saying)

Racial notes:

Dragonkin are capable of breathing a small jet of flame (About twice as much as a cigarette lighter). They have naturally tough scaly skin and are resistant to heat and cold. They are also known to be deceptively strong for their build.

Silverwings are capable of flying (and often wear lighter amour because of that). They are very agile and some rare individuals develop psyonic abilities. This is rumored to be linked to the number of tails they have.

Weapons shown (standard issue):

Dragonkin: "Regulator" Assault rifle (with built in chainsaw bayonette. Stabbing tip and chainsaw teeth made of unknown metal alloy.)

Silverwing: "Starstorm" Rapid-fire pulse lazer carbine

BG: "Angelwing" Strike Bomber:
This is one of the most feared weapons used by the Coalition. They are small, two-seater bombers that carry enough of a payload to significantly damage capital ships and yet are as fast as and more manuverable than normal starfighters. For this matter, they are sometimes used as starfighters in dogfights. Only drawback is a low hull strength, which forces it to rely on it's shields, and a limited bomb capacity, which causes them to attack in quick strikes on capital ships before retreating to reload.
